Position Summary:

The Charge Nurse (Registered Nurse) will provide, coordinate, and supervise nursing care to ensure quality nursing care for all residents of our home. The Charge Nurse will be responsible for identifying incidents and taking immediate action to ensure the safety of residents, visitors, and other staff. He/she will also provide leadership and act as a resource for the nursing department.

Assets and Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in nursing. Direct geriatric nursing experience is considered an asset.
  • Completion of a university degree, college or other approved registered nursing program is required.
  • Registration/ability to obtain registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) with the appropriate certification of registration and entitled to practice without restriction; proof of registration must be provided through the CNO website or some other method involving the CNO.
  • Registered/eligible for registration with the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO).

Responsibilities:

  • Assuming charge of the Home and the assigned home area.
  • Assisting in the planning, provision, and supervision of nursing care, and exercising judgment to meet resident needs.
  • Assuming responsibility for the administration of medications and treatments as prescribed by a physician or according to established policies and protocols.
  • Assessing, documenting, and discussing resident conditions, and obtaining and processing orders from the physician.
  • Working with the nursing team in developing and maintaining current RAI MDS assessments.
  • Ordering, controlling, and distributing resident medication and other necessary supplies in conjunction with the Director of Care and/or RPN.
  • Contributing to and being familiar with and following the residents’ plans of care.
  • Attending and participating in resident care conferences and in-services.
  • Providing direction, critical thinking and supervision of Registered Practical Nurses, Personal Support Workers and those working as nurses’ aides.
  • Assisting in maintaining adequate staffing levels as required, and notifying the Director of Care of any staff schedule changes or concerns.
  • Following the charge nurse responsibilities as outlined in the Fire Safety Plan and Emergency Plan.
  • Assuming responsibility for his/her own professional development and maintenance of his/her own clinical competence.
  • Assessing and identifying appropriate nursing interventions.
  • Collaborating with members of an interdisciplinary health team to plan, implement, coordinate, and evaluate care.
  • Operating or monitoring medical apparatus or equipment.

Shift Information:

Full-time

Ability to provide effective service in French (proficient in conversational French for activities of daily living) is considered an asset.
